Data Centers lack the Electric Power for Artificial Intelligence. A new Law, signed by Biden, promotes Nuclear Power
Aug. 21, 2024, 4:23 a.m.
On June 18, 2024, the US Congress passed the misnamed “Advance Act” that will provide electric power to data-centers.
The Advance Act aims to expedite the development of next generation nuclear reactors and pays to support aging ones. It directs the Department of Energy to reduce regulatory cost for advanced reactors and provides deployment incentives.
Joe Biden signed the Advance Act into law on July 9, 2024. All this while so-called modern societies have not yet cleaned up the damaged nuclear reactors at Fukushima, Chernobyl and Three Mile Island. And the so-called “spent” highly radioactive nuclear fuel is still piling up at the power plants. With one exception, Onkalo in Finland, no permanent deposits for nuclear waste have been built anywhere - even though the waste needs to remain safe for 100,000 years.
The reason so many of us have not even heard about the Advance Act is that only two Senators voted against it: Bernie Sanders and Ed Markey (88 to 2). And in the House the vote was 393 to 13. There was one principled voice - and it belongs to Rashida Tlaib from Michigan. She said: “I voted present in rejection of this ridiculous decision to tie the re-authorization of vital firefighting programs for our communities together with poison pills that undermine nuclear safety …”
This program contains four clips:
On August 18, 2024 the Financial Times published an article entitled: AI Power Demand Could Stifle Industry’s Growth -
On July 28, 2024, CNBC published a film on YouTube under the title: How The Massive Power Draw Of Generative AI Is Overtaxing Our Grid. And even if we generate enough power, our ageing grid is increasingly unable to handle transmitting the power to where it’s needed.
And a little stronger in the wording: the Synapse channel on YouTube ran a mini-documentary entitled: The Answer to AI’s Insane power needs and … published on May 8, 2024.
And in closing: On June 21, 2024, The Washington Post published an article entitled: AI is exhausting the power grid. Tech firms are seeking a miracle solution.

Aug. 19, 2024, 3:25 p.m.

World BEYOND War, and a growing coalition of peace groups welcomes you to join a fast and days of action in New York City from August 10 – 15, 2024, as an assembly of peace activists delivers to various Missions to the United Nations an online email letter signed by thousands of people from around the world. We will gather each weekday across from the United Nations at the Isaiah Wall, (First Avenue and 41st St.) at 10:00 a.m. Please help spread the word about the action.
The world has watched in horror as Israel has unleashed its ferocious and unlawful assault on the Palestinian people in Gaza, with a declared intent, from the very beginning, to stop food, electricity, water, and other basic goods from entering this occupied territory.
On July 9, 2024, UN Experts declared that the recent deaths of more Palestinian children due to hunger and malnutrition leaves no doubt that famine has spread across the entire Gaza strip.
In the past seven months the healthcare system in the Gaza Strip has been systematically dismantled. According to OCHA, 24 hospitals in Gaza, Palestine are now out of service, while 493 health workers have been killed.
There is no telling what the indirect human cost in deaths and long-term injuries will be as a result of aid and treatment having been denied.
According to the United Nations, a staggering 1.7 million people, constituting approximately 75% of Gaza’s 2.2 million residents, are internally displaced. This displacement has given rise to formidable challenges affecting the population and straining the humanitarian response, particularly in the areas of shelter, food, sanitation, and health.
The current climatic conditions in Gaza further exacerbate the hardships faced by displaced individuals trying to survive in tents.
Mindful of the suffering that Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank endure, we urge the members states of the United Nations to uphold the rule of law where the United Nations Security Council has failed. Member states of the General Assembly can and should enact the “Uniting for Peace” resolution 377 to end Israeli genocide of Palestinians in Gaza.
