TB 170120 Don't Freak Out!

Jan. 20, 2017, 2:50 a.m.
In spite of the name for this week’s show, the central theme is DO FREAK OUT! In that spirit, we thus provide listeners with numerous and various reasons for doing so — starting with the fact that this program airs on Inauguration Day! In ‘The Tardy Hearse’ we contemplate the imminent death of the Republican Party. In addition to freaking out about the Rump, you need to REALLY be freaking out about the enemy hidden in the shadows, for these people are the true wheel-turners and no one even knows who they are. In ‘Art Not’ we reveal why ’squats’ and ‘alternative’ performance spaces are so vital to our culture — and for the finale this week, we provide a little comic relief in the form of a history lesson about a 19th Century Washingtonian pig that briefly became the leading topic of discussion in the halls of power in both London and in Washington DC! The Pig War! Only in the Thunderbolt!

STOP Betsy DeVos - Protect Public Education

Jan. 19, 2017, 4:26 p.m.
Betsy DeVos Trumps Nominee for Education Secretary is an Enemy of Public Schools with Carol Corbett Burris became Executive Director of the Network for Public Education Foundation in August 2015, after serving as principal of South Side High School in the Rockville Centre School District in NY since 2000. In 2010, she was named Educator of the Year by the School Administrators Association of NYS and in 2013, she was named SAANYS NYS High School Principal of the Year. Dr. Burris co-authored Detracking for Excellence and Equity (2008) and authored On the Same Track: How Schools Can Join the 21st Century Struggle against Re-segregation (2014). . DeVos has not taught or worked in public schools, or been a parent of public school children, or earned experience or expertise as a leader, scholar, or teacher educator in public school districts. Yto advance Trumps call to deregulate and privatize, she would be ideal. Through her family foundation (funded by the Amway fortune), and through her personal role on boards for such advocacy organizations as Jeb Bushs Foundation for Excellence in Education, she has effectively leveraged her wealth to shape policy, including the expansion of school-choice and voucher programs, alongside the deregulation of charter schools. The research is clear that none of these 'reforms' will strengthen public education overall, and instead, have already proven to indirectly or even directly exacerbate inequities. Public education should be treated as a centerpiece for strengthening any democratic nation, and what the U.S. needs now is not the heralding of silver bullets but instead the investment in systemic reforms that draw on both a sound body of research and a compelling vision of the promises of public schools. The narrow and ill-informed vision and rhetoric put forth by Trump and DeVos take us in the wrong direction. ******************* Brave New Films presents Protect Public Education - Stop Betsy DeVos! Trumps nomination of Betsy DeVos for Education Secretary is a threat to public education. DeVos has spent millions funding the privatization of education in Michigan. The result? A failing school system where almost 80% of schools are run by private, for-profit companies. The charter schools in Michigan, influenced by DeVoss agenda, perform lower than national averages, have been criticized for misuse of taxpayer funding, and frequently shut down doors without warning or community input. Adding to the alarm is the fact that DeVos has never held a professional position in education in her life, but plans to lead the Department of Education, where she would be in charge of overseeing and providing equal access to quality education for all Americans.

The Taxcast: January 2017

Jan. 19, 2017, 1:23 p.m.
we look at tax justice and public procurement – the efforts to hit tax dodging companies where it really hurts on a local level – trying to stop them bidding for public money for public contracts. Also: how massive amounts of money are flowing into Tax Haven USA to circumvent the flawed Common Reporting Standard – South Dakota is apparently raking in tax evading capital the slippery world of ‘residence planning’ and the ‘synthetic residency’ dodge we discuss the UK’s Criminal Finances Bill likely to be passed this year, which includes proposals for ‘Unexplained Wealth Orders’ and holding tax evading enablers to account. An amendment to the bill could force UK satellite tax havens, the overseas territories to create public registers of the real owners of companies, something they’ve so far refused to do. and we consider the British threat to the EU: ‘if you give us a bad Brexit deal, we’ll push regulation-lite, tax haven UK even further in a race to the bottom and shoot ourselves in the foot.’

Out of the Woods - Show #355 - 1-28-17

Jan. 19, 2017, 1:15 p.m.
This version of the program is divided into 6 segments so broadcasters who desire to use this content can insert your station info, etc. The segments vary in length. Out of the Woods is an earthy, wires and wood, mostly acoustic program featuring some of the best new and established artists from the worlds of folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriters, alt.country, Americana, classic country, old-time, Celtic, and everything that falls in between. The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Kate MacLeod, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s. As a child, Colcord grew up a ravenous music fan with an ear for both rock and folk. All of these influences converge on Out of the Woods to bring you a mix which is as much on the edge as it is down home. Folk music with a rock 'n' roll soul
