Muhammad Ali: Worshiped, Misunderstood, Exploited
June 9, 2016, 11:33 a.m.
Ishmael Reed highlights important details of the life of âThe Greatestâ that are being overlooked in the reviews of the life of Muhammad Ali. Reed points out The Nation of Islam played a large role in the heroic moment when Ali refused to be drafted during the Vietnam war and during the 3 years Ali was prevented from following his profession, the black Muslims(as they were called) stood by him and enabled him to survive. Reed takes the occasion to argue for a boxerâs union to give fighters some protection from promoters and managers who put them at risk.

False Information equals False Intelligence: Looking at the Ways Far-Right Based Pseudointellectualism Harms People of Colour
June 9, 2016, 10:45 a.m.
(Warning: Rough Language) TheAngryindian asks, as we witness the transition of our brother, Muhammad Ali: How credible is the information we base much of our sociopolitical decision-making on? Further, why are we not paying attention to (or worse, enabling) the ways in which false information does even more damage to people and communities than what it is claiming to 'cure' or 'explain'? The spark behind this dispatch was a recent article, 'Living In The South Is "Risk Factor" For HIV Infection', Alabama News / May 11, 2016, which shows to some extent that the false information still circulating about what HIV and AIDS are about and the fake, supposedly Afrocentrism-based 'false-cure' and 'magical' industries that prey upon the misinformed and the gullible have had a devastating on the African World. Cartesian-sense demands that we challenge ourselves to demand better intellectually from the larger (colonial) educational system; our medical providers, our news sources and especially each other if we intend to survive the 21st century intact. EXTRAS: Nat Turner Rebellion - 'Tribute to a Slave' and an archived radio interview with Professor Manu Ampim of California State University & Charles Fair of the MBA Journal over the Afrocentric controversy: 'Urban Myth of âJohn Hanson, being First Black Presidentâ taken to task!'

Israeli Occupation and Settelments: The Roots of Unrest in Jerusalem
June 8, 2016, 8:31 p.m.
Zakaria Odeh, Executive Director of the Union of the Civic Coalition for Palestinian Rights in Jerusalem speaks about the
the non-violent campaign to resist Israel's efforts to ethnically cleans the historic Palestinian population from Jerusalem. He explains the original designation of Jerusalem as an International City under the United Nations. In 1967 East Jerusalem was occupied by the Israeli military and then quickly annexed. That move denied the Palestinians living there protection under the Geneva Convention. Mr. Odeh details the various means that the Israeli government uses to confiscate Palestinian owned homes under the pretext of public planning. The long term aim of the Israeli government has been to claim all of Jerusalem as the capital of the state and he speaks about how language, bulldozers and concrete walls are used to advance a plan, a Master Plan to insert a majority population of settler religious extremists who function as shock troops while receiving protection and support from the State.
His is an inspiring story of resistance in the face of State violence and racism against his community.
Mr. Odeh is also the President of Defense for Children International - Palestine. He speaks about the arrests and brutalization of children that the Israeli government conducts and a perversion of "house arrest" that Israel has developed to turn children against their parents.

Peter K Enns on Incarceration Nation; We're No, 1!
June 8, 2016, 12:48 p.m.
Peter K Enns discusses issues raised in his book, 'Incarceration Nation: How the US Became the Most Punitive Democracy in the World;â(Cambridge) tracing the influence of the public on politicians and of the media on the public and how the rise and fall of crime rates is reflected in similar moves in public opinion; he sees the recognition of the incarceration problem by Republicans, e.g.,Paul Ryan and Koch brothers as a positive and that this issue will likely be a subject of debate in presidential elections as the costs of imprisonment to the public through legislative budget needs becomes evident coupled with the judicial system not functioning as intended and that the African-American and Latino populations have been its primary victims; he also believes the ongoing reports of prisoners freed after serving long sentences for crimes they didn't commit has had a positive impact on the public view of incarceration.

Robert Fisk on the Armenian Holocaust
June 7, 2016, 6:37 p.m.
When on June 2nd, 2016, the German Parliament overwhelmingly adopted a resolution declaring the killings of Armenians by Ottoman Turks in 1915 a genocide, the Turkish government angrily denounced the vote as ânull and void,â. And Prime Minister Erdogan called his ambassador in Germany back to Ankara for consultations. Fear spread among German political leaders that Erdogan might retaliate and unleash tens of thousands of refugees that Turkey currently hosts.
Robert Fisk is the award-winning Middle East correspondent of the London Independent. He has reported from the Middle East since 1976, speaks arabic and lives in Beirut, Lebanon.
Fisk wrote on June 2, 2016 in the Independent that Germany now joined France and Russia and at least 18 other nations who accept the Armenian genocide as a fact of history, along with Pope Francis â with the US remaining the sole major exception.
Fisk was the only journalist who pointed out that the refugees and migrants, who Europe tried to keep out of come, in many cases, from the very towns and deserts in which the Turks committed their acts of horror against the Armenians 101 years ago.
Fisk writes that "The skulls and bones of Armenians still lie in the sands south of the Turkish border which Isis now controls; and when al-Nusrah captured parts of Deir ez-Zor, they blew up the Armenian cathedral of the Syrian city, took the bones of genocide victims from the vaults and scattered them in the streets." end quote.
Â
In the context of these events here is a talk that Robert Fisk gave to Armenian Americans in San Francisco in 2001 on the 85th anniversary of the Armenian Holocaust - as he chooses to define it. He had just been attacked in the media for using that word.
