BC Prof Charlie Derber: Fascism, Socialism, and the White Working Class

April 2, 2016, 8:20 a.m.
Boston College Professor of Sociology Charles Derber spoke on this subject on March 27, 2016, for the Ethical Society of Boston. In the context of today's presidential campaign, Charlie presented his analysis of the possibility of the advent of fascism, or on the other hand, democratic socialism, in the United States. Charlie reviews the economic crises helping Hitler and fascism rise in Germany, despite a remarkably liberal culture and large socialist and Communist parties making this seem extremely unlikely. Unemployment and poverty were major factors. Sound familiar? Charlie argues that 1920s and 1930s Weimar Germany and the US today share stunning parallels. White working class voters in both elections have been presented with a fascist or neo-fascist narrative of their economic problems and a socialist one. The corporate establishment believes it can control or prevent either option (the fascist or socialist candidates) from upsetting its own priorities. Also sound familiar? In this talk, Charlie looks at the factors which will affect how voters -- especially white workers -- will respond to corporate, fascist and socialist candidates and movements, both in the 2016 elections and beyond. Besides the massive list of his books shown pictorially at http://www.amazon.com/Charles-Derber/e/B001ITXTBO, Charlie's two most recent are The Disinherited Majority: Capital Questions - Piketty and Beyond (2014), and Bully Nation: How the American Establishment Creates a Bullying Society (2016, with Yale Magrass). A basic bio of Charlie is posted at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Derber. [As of 4/5/16, the last 10 minutes of this recording come from a 2nd recorder.]

160 Bangladeshi Immigrants Seeking Asylum Being Deported

April 1, 2016, 6:49 p.m.
From Hurt and Hope During Holy Week Towards Resurrection with The New Sanctuary Coalition NYC and Fahd Ahmed, Exec. Director, DRUM " South Asian Organizing Center The U.S. is scheduled to deport over 160 Bangladeshis who had requested asylum. These men have been kept in detention under deplorable conditions, so much so that they were driven to go on hunger strikes to bring attention to their plight. Now, they are fighting for basic human rights against their imminent deportation. But, on Easter Friday, a special day for many Christians a broad coalition led by faith-based organizations came to Federal Plaza in a pray out to raise up the principles of that holy day by protesting the deportation of their brother Bangladeshis and advocating for changes to our immigration policies that lift up the common humanity of all and provide people with the opportunity to live in dignity. Comments on Palmyra Victory

April 1, 2016, 12:45 p.m.
Phil Taylor comments on the Syrian army victory against ISIS in Palmyra. This is not only a victory for Syria, but the entire world, as the SAA has rescued part of the collective heritage of humanity from the sectarian terrorists sponsored by NATO and the Gulf Co-operation Council. Despite the significance of this turning point in the war on Syria, the defeat of ISIS in this key town is severely underreported in the West. The U.S. coalition does not want to bring attention to its reluctance to attack ISIS in any meaningful way, especially when ISIS crossed the desert in the open to attack Palmyra.

Canada and the American Empire: Losing the Ability to Protect Conscientious Objectors and Private Information

April 1, 2016, 10:21 a.m.
This week's program spotlights two aspects of Canada's relationship with the United States in the face of an aggressive US Defense apparatus. The first involves the situation with US soldiers who fled military service in Iraq for reasons of conscience. Several are now headed back to Federal Court challenging a ruling in favour of them being allowed to stay in Canada. MIchelle Robidoux of the War Resisters Support Campaign makes the case for cancelling this litigation and shares her disappointment with the Liberal government's stance. IN the second half hour, Sandra Finley, a community activist originally from Saskatchewan talks about her concerns about the Canadian Census and particularly Statistics Canada's Contracting partner Lockheed Martin. The former leader of the Saskatchewan Green Party claims that despite StatsCan assurances, personal information cannot be kept private from LM and the US Security State. She states that the Charter of Rights and Freedoms protects Canadians from having to disclose private personal information. She also raises concerns about how the groundwork for a global police state is being rolled out through this technology and centralized control of information.
