In this edition of Radio Curious, we'll visit again with Dr. Elizabeth Allen, a Professor of nursing at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. As a high school student, Dr. Allen was one of the first African American students to integrate the West Virginia high schools in 1957. We begin our conversation with Dr. Allen when she discusses how she was able to successfully get through the educational system, and what changes have occurred in education since then, as they relate to African American students. The book she recommends is 'The Price of Loyalty' by Ron Suskind, with former US Treasury Secretary, Paul O'Neil. This episode originally broadcast in May, 2004.

Assessing Syria's Ceasefire

Phil interviewed Zafar about the recent ceasefire in Syria, showing how the Russian military and diplomatic offensive to maintain the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Syria seems to have prevailed over the U.S. plan for regime change (despite Kerry's 'Plan B' for the partition of Syria.) Bangash argues that the ceasefire seemed as well to foil the plans of Saudi Arabia and Turkey, whose leader, Erdogan, has left that country with no friends among its neighbours. Bangash also briefly discusses the recent Iranian elections.

Methane Disdain

Along with the Affordable Care Act, the Clean Power Plan may end up being one of President Obama’s signature accomplishments. We learned recently, though, about the US Supreme Court’s potential role in determining the fate of the plan. This week on Sea Change Radio, host Alex Wise speaks with two journalists who have been covering other aspects of the plan. First, Mother Jones journalist Tim McDonnell joins us to talk about methane, a dangerous greenhouse gas that is not targeted in the Clean Power Plan or the Paris Agreement, and whose emissions from the oil and gas industry are largely unknown. We discuss the Aliso Canyon leak, efforts to monitor methane, and how much of the methane problem is cows. Then, Washington Post reporter Steven Mufson provides a who’s who in the efforts to obstruct the implementation of the Clean Power Plan.

A Conversation with Maggie and Arnie Gundersen

The Gundersens came to California for a speaking tour at the end of 2015 and offered to meet me in the afternoon before giving a Fukushima update at the Point Reyes Dance Palace. Both worked in the nuclear industry, Maggie in public information, Arnie as an engineer and executive. He was fired from Nuclear Energy Services in 1990. I started by asking them a question that had troubled me for a long time - given that Arnie Gundersen is one of only a handful of whistle blowers. How early did people in the nuclear industry become aware that they were dealing with a monstrously dangerous technology? Arnie and Maggie Gundersen are a close team in the nuclear education work they are now doing. Their work is posted on their web site Fairewinds dot org as videos and pod-casts as well as blog posts on current events, expert witness reports on nuclear safety issues, a book list, media coverage and much more.
