This week's program principally focuses on the history of Canada's involvement in Africa - from the time of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade to privatization of State enterprises to the role of Mining Companies- in undermining popular movements, to examining what changes if any, the new Trudeau government may be offering in terms of foreign policy.
American Aggression Against China
Feb. 18, 2016, 9:21 p.m.
Chris Black criticizes the US warships violating the international 12 mile limit of Chinaâs shoreline. This limit bans military vessels from entering, unless they have permission from the host country.
Not only did the US brag about this violation, but claimed they had every right to go anywhere it was in their interest to go. This exemplifies and clarifies that the US does not recognize the national sovereignty of other countries.
Black mentions that Russia is being blamed for the recent bombing of hospitals in Syria, even though on-the-ground witnesses testified that it was American planes.
Black refers to the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) indoctrination being invoked as a âhigher moral principalâ by imperialism to justify war.
"NO TO THE INVASION OF MY COUNTRY," BURUNDI
Feb. 18, 2016, 9:17 p.m.
Pascasie Minani explains why Belgium, Canada and all other countries should NOT send soldiers to Burundi. First, there is no genocide going on in Burudndi. . Second, Burudi has 10,000 military successfully fighting against terrorism in other countries, esp. Somali. If Burundi needed troops to squelch a dangerous uprising or genocide, they would call back their own. Third, during the colonial days when Burundi did need help, neither Belgium or France did anything.
Pacasie clearly explains the Burundi are tired of war and have turned to dialog and peaceful co-existence. Now, power-sharing rules the country. Even though the population is by far a majority Hutu one, the division of public service institutions is balanced.
Minani is clear that less than 1% of the population causing violence are the youth who have been manipulated. . Is one 1 % more democratic than the 99%? The question is WHO is behind corrupting those young people. Was it the few who stored guns in their homes during election times and who tried to spark a war? Minani asserts They are using the young people as a sacrifice in order to say âHere the genocide is in Burundi.â It is a ploy by Western powers to rationalize bringing international troops to intervene in Burundiâs democracy. It has nothing to do with the President nor his party. It has everything to do with Belgium and France wanting to control natural resources in Burundi (as well as those coming out of the Congo and transported through Rwanda and Burundi).
In response to Phil Taylorâs question re Kagame threatening to remove Burundi in refugee camps in Rwanda, Minani remembers Museveni (Ugandan President) taking credit for helping Rwanda Refugees attack Rwanda in 1994. She hopes he will not be trying the same thing with the Burundi refugees in Rwanda. If so, the Burundi are prepared to fight for their country.
Rwanda Rebuking Refugee Rules
Feb. 18, 2016, 9:14 p.m.
International observers claim that the Kagame regime is helping recruit armed fighters out of the Burundi refugee camps in Rwanda. Kagame retaliates by saying he is going to shut down the camps and move them to other countries. This violates international law, as only the UN agencies can remove refugees.
Refugees are protected, and it is the legal responsibility of the UN to guarantee that camps are peaceful, have adequate health care, have nutrition and that they are kept a 40 kilometer distance from a border where there might be difficulties.
Taylor also addresses President Paul Kagame visit and appearing with General Romeo Dallaire at the exclusive, imperialist based âThe National Club.â Will Dallaire, the self-proclaimed fighter against child soldiers, question Kagame about this activity taking place on Rwandan soil?

Healthcare & The Black Panther Party
Feb. 16, 2016, 9:45 p.m.
The exodus of approximately six million black people from the American South between 1915 and 1970 had a significant role in setting the stage of the civil rights movement of the early 1960s. Many of the children of those who left the south participated in desegregation efforts which included the Freedom Rides and lunch counter sit-ins. The Civil Rights Acts of 1964 and 1965 which attempted to resolve employment discrimination and define voting rights, only changed the law. Many young blacks however did not see changes in their everyday life.
The Black Panther Party for Self-Defense was born out of this disillusionment. Although infiltrated and feared by the F.B.I., the Black Panther Party pioneered social and community programs, including free medical clinics, free meals, and educational programs.
Our guest in this edition of Radio Curious is Columbia University Sociology and Gender Studies Professor Alondra Nelson, author of âBody and Soul: The Black Panther Party and the Fight Against Medical Discrimination.â
We visited by phone from her Office in New York City, on February 13, 2012 and began our conversation when I asked her to describe the Black Panther Party.
The book she recommends is âCrave Radiance: New and Selected Poems,â by Elizabeth Alexander.
Professor Nelsonâs website is http://www.alondranelson.com.
Arnie Gundersen: WHAT DID THEY KNOW, WHEN DID THEY KNOW IT?
Feb. 16, 2016, 7:21 p.m.
On the 5th anniversary of the Fukushima disaster the new Japanese State Secrets Law enacted in 2014 limits information and threatens journalists with jail time. And even Western media make it appear as if the worst has passed.
Acknowledging the reality of this accident with global consequences at least 100 years into the future is not only frightening for just plain folk but would be economically devastating to the energy corporations. When former nuclear engineer Arnie Gundersen was asked by his family in early 2011 where the next nuclear power plant accident would take place he said he was unable to say where but that he was convinced that it would be a Mark I or II General Electric design. Three weeks later the Fukushima Daiichi Mark I reactors melted down.
Almost 1/4 of the so called âfleetâ of nuclear reactors in the US are of the same design as Fukushima Daiichi. If you live in New York City, Boston, Minneapolis, Detroit, Philadelphia, Chicago or Wilmington, you are threatened by one or more of these vulnerable Mark I or II reactors. Only one of them has been closed since Fukushima. The Vermont Yankee in southern Vermont was shut down on December 29, 2014.
The reason Arnie Gundersen is so familiar with this design is that he was an engineer on the Millstone Mark I reactor and a nuclear insider until he was fired in 1990 for pointing out security flaws. Today he publishes on the web site Fairewinds dot org.
Here is a speech he gave at the Fukushima Symposium 2013 that is as brilliantly up to date today as it was then. The two day event on March 11 and 12, 2013 was organized by The Helen Caldicott Foundation and cosponsored by Physicians for Social Responsibility. It was held at the New York Academy of Medicine in New York City.
Alex Camacho: Supreme Court Climate
Feb. 16, 2016, 6:11 p.m.
Remember the Paris Climate Agreement, when it looked for a moment like world leaders were actually going to address our shared global concern? Well, last week the US Supreme Court, in an unprecedented move, granted a stay to the utility companies and 27 states who had filed suit to halt the Obama Administration's lynchpin environmental legislation - the EPA's Clean Power Plan. The stay posed a threat to the recent Paris Climate Agreement. But then, over the weekend, things took a dramatic turn with the death of the Supreme Court's arch-conservative, Antonin Scalia. So what does it all mean for US climate policy? Joining us this week on Sea Change Radio to make sense of the complexities of these court proceedings is environmental law expert Alex Camacho, a Professor at the University of California at Irvine. He describes the implications of the stay, and explains how Scalia's passing does and does not affect this decision by the Court.

Ilan Pappé speaks in Australia on "The Forgotten Palestinians"
Feb. 16, 2016, 4:12 p.m.
Speaking in Sydney, Australia, Pappé lays out some of the sordid history of Israel's claim to be a "democracy" while simultaneously building and enforcing a racist apartheid structure. "The Forgotten Palestinians" are Palestinians who managed to remain within Israel's official borders in the course of the Nakba. They became Israeli citizens. But essentially they enjoy no rights and are confronted by a deeply prejudicial system of laws and treatment.
The most effective way to challenge the distortions, myths and outright lies of the Israeli narrative which drives American Policy is to present the historical, documented facts which we describe as the Palestinian narrative. This Week In Palestine systematically tries to present that narrative each week, well researched, well documented history, and the analysis and opinion which flows from that history. And no one is more reliable in the presentation of that narrative than New Historian, Ilan Pappé. That is why we feature him so often on this program, and why we do so again this week.
So our extended feature presentation is Professor Ilan Pappé speaking in Sydney, Australia, where the Jewish Lobby was unsuccessful in its attempts to prevent this lecture from occurring.
