Nancy Murray reports on her 13th visit to Gaza
June 3, 2016, 3:08 p.m.
Our main presentation today is Nancy Murray's reportback on her 13th visit to Gaza in April. She went in order to be involved in the 6th international conference entitled âMental Health and Human Rightsâ last April, sponsored by the Gaza Community Mental Health Programme (GCMHP).
A remarkable feature was its venue, Gaza City, which Israel has long decreed off-limits for international visitors. This is a tall order in the Gaza Stripâs crushing conditions. But Dr. Yasser Abu Jamei â who lost 28 members of his extended family in a single missile strike during Israelâs 2014 military onslaught â is determined to build on the legacy of the late Dr. Eyad el Sarraj, who founded the GCMHP in 1990 to instill hope and heal the spirit of a people who were exposed to violence and the loss of freedom and human rights on a daily basis. âPlanting hope is our main duty.â So declared Abu Jamei, now head of GCMHP, during his April 19th keynote address to the 800 people who attended. For nearly a decade, Israel has imposed a devastating chokehold on the territory, subjecting its 1.8 million inhabitants to collective punishment for Hamasâ victory in the 2006 legislative elections and its rout of US-backed Fatah forces the following year.
Dr. Murray first visited Gaza in 1988; she co-founded the Gaza Mental Health Foundation in 2001. She describes the conditions she encountered and how people under siege are seeking to rebuild their lives.
Planning an international conference in the locked-down Gaza Strip was itself an exercise in optimism. Internationals, other Palestinians and Israelis were blocked from entering Gaza for the 5th International GCMHP Conference held in October 2008, and had to participate via tenuous video-link from Ramallah. This year, German efforts secured Israeli permits for the entry of just over a dozen Europeans and Americans, an accomplishment presented by conference organizers as a harbinger of the day when Gazaâs intense isolation would be at an end. We were given a warm â even joyful â reception, as if our presence was in itself life-giving oxygen from the outside world.
The world inside Gaza was grimly portrayed in an exhibit of childrenâs drawings of the machinery of death, compiled by GCMHP. As Jeff Halper details in his 2015 book, War Against the People: Israel, the Palestinians and Global Pacification, Israel has profited greatly from the sale of weapons that are âbattle-testedâ in the Gaza Strip. In the process, Gaza has been turned into a kind of lab to find the breaking point of human beings.
Before Nancy Murray's presentation:
Our host offers brief observations about the so-called Palestinian Authority (PA). At the center of Israel's control mechanisms is its use of the PA. It's certainly not a trusted Palestinian institution that has as its mission the security and well-being of Palestinians, as some hoped when it was established by the Oslo Accords.

Out of the Woods - Show #322 - 6-11-16
June 3, 2016, 6:15 a.m.
This version of the program is divided into 6 segments so broadcasters who desire to use this content can insert your station info, etc. The segments vary in length.
Out of the Woods is an earthy, wires and wood, mostly acoustic program featuring some of the best new and established artists from the worlds of folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriters, alt.country, Americana, classic country, old-time, Celtic, and everything that falls in between. The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Kate MacLeod, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s. As a child, Colcord grew up a ravenous music fan with an ear for both rock and folk. All of these influences converge on Out of the Woods to bring you a mix which is as much on the edge as it is down home. Folk music with a rock 'n' roll soul

Victoria Day in Canada, Patriots Day in Quebec
June 2, 2016, 5:02 p.m.
How to holiday? In English Canada the holiday at the end of May is to celebrate Queen Victoria who presided over the Empire, upon which the sun never set and to which Canada contributed soldiers and war material. But in Quebec there is another story and sentiment. National Patriots Day is marked to remember those who fought for democracy and independence in the 1837 Rebellion. Speeches are given at statues of the rebel leaders. Robin Philpot explains why we have âsolitudesâ in our ceremonies and what it tells us about Canada/Quebec today.
Jennette Shannon & Detroit Eviction Defense podcast
June 2, 2016, 4:59 p.m.
This is a special podcast release from The Final Straw Radio, airing weekly on WSFM-LP in Asheville, North Carolina and elsewhere.
On June 1st, 2016, Jennette Shannon and members of Detroit Eviction Defense held a block party in a neighborhood of Detroit, Michigan. Jennette, a resident of this neighborhood for decades, and her teenage son have been in immediate danger of eviction due to legal wrangling and financial violence done by the vulture fund sometimes known as Thor Real Estate. Jennette has paid tens of thousands of dollars in fees to cover the company's tax debts and to lawyers, has had her backyard parcelled and mortgaged by the company multiple times over and has been offered potentially fraudulent deeds and other paperwork. The block part was well attended by neighbors and activists from a plethora of community organizations from around Detroit to kick off the defiant struggle against eviction.
Today, June 2nd marks the beginning of that occupation, in which community members and folks from Detroit Eviction Defense are holding the space in solidarity. More on this house defense and the work of Detroit Eviction Defense can be found at http://detroitevictiondefense.org.
For other episodes of our show, check out thefinalstrawradio.noblogs.org or find the current episode at http://ashevillefm.org/the-final-straw and feel free to drop us a line at thefinalstrawradio@riseup.net
UPDATE:
On June 2nd, we released a podcast episode with folks from Detroit Eviction Defense about the situation of Jennette Shannon, a single mom from Detroit who was facing eviction and which DED hoped to stave off through active solidarity. Sadly, on June 4th the house was overwhelmed by Sheriffs, movers & Bailiff and the ground was lost. To check out the podcast, follow this link: http://radio4all.net/index.php/program/86844
More updates to come on how to support Jennette and those injured during the defense as well as plans for the future at http://detroitevictiondefense.org
