From the Margins: May Day, 2016
May 1, 2016, 2:17 p.m.
Happy May Day. The show features announcements of the Mayworks events in Fredericton, an interview with the notorious BLOG, Charles Leblanc, and a conversation with Alex and Shauna, founders of the satirical miracle of NB, the Manatee. Also, this is (possibly) the last new show until September. Asaf is out West for the summer and Cody may be headed in the same direction. Stay tuned for FTM's greatest hits for the rest of the summer, But maybe, just maybe ... there will be some surprise live shows.
May Day with Peter Linebaugh
May 1, 2016, 2 p.m.
To friends we've met, and to those we have yet to meet, I'd like to wish everyone a happy May Day. As we'll hear in the following hour, this day has a long celebrated history. From its many European pagan roots as a celebration of fertility as the fruits of the spring planting season began to... uh, spring forth. Then on to the repressive winter that fell early on May 3rd and 4th of 1886 in Illinois with, first, the killing of workers striking for an 8 hour work day at the McCormick Works and then the repression of anarchist and socialist workers and organizers following the bombing at Haymarket Square in Chicago of that same year. From there to the taking up of May 1st as International Workers Day by struggling groups around the world and the U.S. adoption of a sanctioned Labor Day in September of the year.
To divide an international working class, The U.S. government, repressers of that May Day 1886 sanctioned a Labor Day to be celebrated in September, declared the first of May both Law Day (an obvious testament to Irony in respect to the Haymarket 8, all jailed and 4 executed) and, for some, it's celebration as Americanism Day. Whatever that means. In 2006 & 2007, immigrants rights marches were seen on and around May Days that, for many, re-sparked the importance of this day. The protests and festivals swelled to numbers nearly unmatched in the history of protest on Turtle Island, and were accompanied by school and work walkouts and boycott days.
This hour we'll be hearing Peter Linebaugh, author of the recently printed book "The Incomplete, True, Authentic & Wonderful History of May Day" to present some of his meditations from the last 30 years but covering ancient times, through the first May Pole on Turtle Island, through to today.

The rest of the hour will feature songs that made myself and William, cohost of The Final Straw, feel a bit in the spirit of the day. Whether you're out there today taking direct action, in repose from the horrors of wage slavery, resisting the carceral state, gardening, dancing around a May Pole or otherwise celebrating the possibilities of this year to come when, hell, we might as well end this system of exclusion and extraction: We wish you a fire on your tongue, love in your heart and free land beneath you.

David Archer - On Climate Change
April 30, 2016, 8:39 p.m.
Climate scientist at the University of Chicago, Dr. David
Archer spoke at Revolution Books in Chicago. They invited him to speak after seeing an article in the NYT by Dr. James Hansen which raised alarm that current scientific models, used to inform public policy, are insufficiently sensitive to the actual earth systems change driven by increasing anthropomorphic CO2 in the atmosphere. Professor Archer speaks of his optimism that the social and political forces put in play by COP21 will yield the changes necessary to meet average global temperature targets of 1.5 degrees C.
His 2009 book "The Long Thaw: How Humans are Changing the Next 100,000 Years of Earth's Climate", presented a long term perspective that he recognizes will need adjustment
considering that "the weather is getting really weird" and
field scientists have identified a number of new factors that are influencing the stability of the Greenland Ice Sheet and heat transport between the Equator and the Poles. Added atmospheric heat and a warmer ocean mean more water vapor in the atmosphere and more intense weather events which are
playing out around the planet. He comments on the failure of neoliberal economic doctrine to grasp the physical facts of Earth's climate system or irreversible phase change potential. [At this point in time University of Chicago economists remain incapable of separating their fantasy doctrine from physical reality.] He explains why he thinks the near term concern with methane, of some Arctic field scientists, is a distraction from the primary task of eliminating fossil fuel use, the main source of CO2.
Commenting on attempting a geoengineering "fix" through solar radiation management, he explained its unintended effect of making the planet more arid.

Robin Philpot recalls his interview with Jane Jacobs
April 30, 2016, 8:20 a.m.
Many take pride in Jane Jacobs as a Toronto resident and world-renowned authority on development of cities, but few remember or reflect on her opinion that Canada would be best served with some type of sovereignty-association with Quebec. In her last published interview she spoke with Robin Philpot because she knew he would ask about Quebec. In part 2 of our talk with Mr. Philpot he details the ways in which a false picture of the Rwandan professor Leon Mugesera led to the tragedy of his removal from Canada and eventual life sentence in Rwanda.

Puerto Rico Drowning in Debt
April 29, 2016, 6:12 p.m.
Vulture Hedge Funds Circle on Higher Ground as Puerto Rico Drowns in Debt
with
University of Puerto Rico Prof. Rafael Bernabe Riefkohl, Working People's Party spokesperson and candidate for the Governor of Puerto Rico, and noted co-author of Puerto Rico in the American
Century A History since 1898
Puerto Rico s fiscal perils are currently in the news. It is an island with a poverty rate approaching 50 percent, a public debt that amounts to over $20,000 per inhabitant (more than its median income of $19,518). While most of the attention in Puerto Rico s case focuses on technical issues relating to the solvency of municipal bonds and austerity measures, the history of U.S. policies have resulted in more than three and a half million Puerto Ricans being treated as second class citizens. With a poverty rate of more than 45 percent (more than double that of Mississippi), Puerto Rico has had serious long-term economic problems that, like its current massive public debt, have been historically papered over. Meanwhile, the
hedge fund vultures and Wall Street banks and lawyers charging over $1.4 billion in a seven-year period for charges like swap termination fees are circling Puerto Rico. They are sensing a fiscal death spiral they can feed off and caring little about the consequences for nearly four million residents as they manipulate a financial system which is largely devoid of any social conscience. The bottom line is that Puerto Rico is the United States largest colony that it decided to take by force 117 years ago and has since treated like a resented orphan it has consistently undernourished politically & economically. Puerto Rico s current fiscal crisis is, in this sense, really a crisis of American colonial policies and will the United States accept responsibility for the negative consequences of its imperialist past? Prof. Barnabe Riefkohl, candidate for Governor of Puerto Rico talks about this and approaches for the Island s recovery and more long term solutions for Puerto Rico s fiscal problems.
Re-thinking protest: Playbooks on How to Change the World
April 29, 2016, 3:27 p.m.
The art and architecture of successful activism is the featured topic in this week's Global Research News Hour.
In the first half hour, after the news notes segment, we hear an interview with Houston-based freelance journalist and community activist Derrick Broze. In a twenty minute interview with broadcaster Chris Cook, Broze elaborates on his involvement with independent journalism and its value, he expands on the concept of Conscious Resistance, the patterns of thinking society enables to keep us imprisoned, and the true meaning of anarchism and where it connects with spirituality. This interview was originally aired January 6, 2016 on Victoria based radio station CFUV 101.9FM during the program Gorilla Radio (Tune in every Wednesday from 1-2pm Pacific time)
We devote the final half hour to Occupy Wall street founder and author Micah White. Between an interview with the Global Research News Hour, and an evening talk with Winnipeg-based anti-poverty activist Donald Benham, White expands on his views on all aspects of resistance and struggle, from the success and failure of Occupy, to the enabling of ineffective protest, to where the next revolutionary moments are likely to present themselves.
