Script/Transcript for program: Food and Climate Change

Wayne Roberts has known for a long time what changes need to be made to be a sustainable and just society. He taught Labour Studies at McMaster University, was a front line activist, writer of both books and a long standing column for NOW magazine in Toronto. He is the author of "Real Food For a Change" and most recently "The No-Nonsense Guide to World Food". His latest post has been with Toronto Food Policy Council and runs a blog found here: http://wayneroberts.ca/about/ His talk recently held in Hamilton, pointed out the one real way people can change the effects of Climate Change and how we eat. His main point was the amount of fuel used to grow harvest, package, and ship food to supermarkets. We can choose how we purchase our food. Do we go to the supermarket - buy packages of plastic and styrofoam and add to the cycle of pollution? We can make changes by supporting local Farmers Markets, and growers, and by asking our local supermarkets to stock locally grown food. This is not the same as buying organic produce that is shipped thousands of miles. This means buying locally grown food in season and exploring ways to preserve, pickle, and ferment food for our storage. There is a growing Slow Food Movement in Ontario, and Hamilton is a big part of it through the efforts of Karen Burson. http://www.slowfood.ca/convivia_news.php?id=45 http://m.twitter.com/eklectickitchen http://hamiltoneatlocal.blogspot.com/2008/11/lets-sit-down-together-for-tableland.html www.oside.ca
