From the University of the West of England, Professor Peter Fleming’s desert island choice was Imagining Robin Hood by A J Pollard. Taking stories and ballads that date back to the fifteenth and early sixteenth century, Pollard examines the Robin Hood legend in the economic, social and political context of the time. As Peter said, Robin Hood appears to have been, “all things to all men.”
Peter stayed with the medieval period for his ‘wild card’ choice, The Waning of the Middle Ages by Johan Huizinga, which argues that the end of the Middle Ages should be seen as a pinnacle of achievement in its own right rather than simply as a prelude for the Renaissance.

Westminster Abbey nuclear service condemned by 200 clerics
01 May 2019 - A statement which calls on the Dean of Westminster Abbey to “urgently reconsider” a planned National Service of Thanksgiving for Britain’s nuclear weapons system has been signed by 194 Anglican clerics.
The statement, co-ordinated by Christian CND, says the Westminster Abbey service to mark 50 years of Britain’s Continuous At Sea Deterrent should be cancelled because it is at odds with the Church of England’s policy to “work tirelessly” for the elimination of nuclear weapons.
The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament has said it will hold protests outside the Abbey on the 3rd May, the day of the service, and will perform a ‘die-in’ to represent the victims of nuclear warfare.

Eric Walker runs an anti-nuclear and peace film archive in Ipswich called Concord Media. Founded in 1959 Concord quickly grew from humble beginnings to become a small cottage industry. It progressed in the ‘70s to become a company limited by guarantee to cope with the ever increasing demand for its services.
Concord is a major UK distributor of audio-visual media in social and moral issues and specialise in the sale and hire of educational titles useful for training and counselling.
Many titles are unobtainable elsewhere and are much sought after. For example titles which illustrate the devastating effects that can occur within the family and the community because of drug and alcohol addiction, racial and sexual harassment, bereavement and child abuse.

Rodney Shakespeare is the author of The Modern Universal Paradigm' (2007) on how the Western world economics today is just a cheeky way to channel wealth to the rich.
Binary economics is the expression of a new universal paradigm or new understanding of reality that creates a new economics, a new politics, a new justice and a new morality.
It addresses the big environmental questions and is very relevant to the technological shift which smashes out traditional, secure, well-paid jobs and instead creates the insecure, low-paid, temporary, part-time, zero hours contract jobs of the ‘Gig economy’.
Crucially, binary economics ensures that, over time, all individuals come to have ownership of, and access to, productive capacity and the benefits thereof, thus making certain that every individual has a genuine income. Without the new modern universal paradigm – which is relevant to all societies including modern Islam – there
will be no peace, nor an end to colonialism and racism.
