Hey Listeners,

Tonight we’re going to travel across the San Francisco Bay and back 50+ years to take a look at the West Oakland blues scene. I watched a short but great documentary about West Oakland blues called Long Train Running. It was a the film school thesis project for Marlon Riggs filmmaker and gay activist that died of AIDS in 1994.

It’s a really cool film about a lesser-known blues scene that grew out of the African-American migration to the Bay Area that brought folks from the Louisiana and Texas area to Oakland in search of jobs in the wartime ship building industry. So stay tuned for some great blues tracks.

You can see the film on the Criterion Channel and you might look for the full-length documentary about the same subject matter – Evolutionary Blues which I have not seen yet.
