Sharmini Peries is the Int'l Relations Director to President Hugo Chavez. She speaks on the successful policies, challenges, revolutionary goals of Chavez that are bucking globalization trends and the role of the NED- fundedAFLCIO in the Apr 02 coup.
Produced by the L.A. Sound Posse
The AFL-CIO, funded by the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) , played a significant role in the April 2002 coup against the Chavez government - essentially by funding and organizing a national oil strike. Oil is the mainstay of the Venezuelan economy.
The AFL-CIO is sometimes called the AFL-CIA . Kent Wong explains the long history of the AFL-CIO working against liberation movements abroad. Tens of millions of NED and State Dept dollars are funneled to the AFL-CIO to prop up the U.S. Foreign policy and it's right -wing Cold War agenda---all below the radar screen of most unions in this country.
The complexities of supporting Progressive leaders in the AFL-CIO to more effectively change the policies of the International Dept of the AFL-CIO are stressed. The Int'l Dept consists of only a few members with inordinate power.
