-----------------
A 30 minute radio documentary produced by Tadamon! a collective of activists in Montreal working to build solidarity with movements for social & economic justice in Lebanon. This documentary is the first in a series of weekly reports which will be produced throughout July & August of 2006 by members of Tadamon! currently on a delegation to Lebanon.

This radio documentary uncovers present day social & economic situation in Lebanon, focusing on the growing poverty rates throughout the country. Recent estimates on poverty in Lebanon indicate that upwards of 35-40% of the country is living below the poverty line. This radio piece attempts to address poverty within the context of Lebanons civil-war between 1975 & 1990, the post-war reconstruction and the major political changes taking place today in Lebanon.

Featuring the voices of Dr. Elie Yachoui, Dean of the Faculty of Economics at Notre Dame University, Adib Nehmeh, Policy Advisor at the United Nations Development Program in Lebanon [UNDP], Kamal Hamdan of the Consultation & Research Institute of Lebanon, Ziad Abdel Samad of the Arab NGO Network for Development in Lebanon.

This documentary highlights voices critical of the social & economic policies of successive national governments who have not adequately addressed Lebanons alarming poverty rates both before and after the 2005 Syria military withdrawal from the country.

Importantly this radio documentary also addresses the growing poverty rates in Lebanon within the context of globalization, as the country currently maintains a staggering national debt of over 40 billion dollars which in large part is owed to international financial institutions such as the World Bank & IMF. International political pressure and domestic economic polices set by the government of Lebanon, has lead to massive privatization of the countries social sector which many Lebanese social activists view as a dangerous step for the nations poor.
