On this month's edition of No One Is Illegal Radio, we hear from two organizers and activists based in the New York City area, Ashanti Alston and Biju Mathew.
Produced and hosted by Ayesha, Leila P, Jaggi and Mostafa, members of No One Is Illegal in Montreal. 514-848-7583 -- noii-montreal@resist.ca -- www.ckut.ca [No One Is Illegal-Montreal website will be on the net soon!]
ASHANTI ALSTON OMOWALI: Ashanti is an anarchist activist, a former political prisoner, and member of the Black Panther Party; he is the former northeast coordinator for Critical Resistance, a current co-chair of the National Jericho Movement to free U.S. political prisoners and a member of pro-Zapatista people-of-color U.S.-based EstaciÃÆïÿýÃÆÃâón Libre.
In this interview with NOII-Montreal members Mostafa and Leila P, Ashanti addresses nationalism and resistance, immigration justice and anti-border movements, the challenges of multiracial organizing, and community responses to the Katrina disaster, among other topics.
BIJU MATHEW: Biju is originally from Hyderabad, India. For the past decade, he has been an organizer with the New York Taxi Workers Alliance, which represents thousands of predominantly immigrant taxi drivers. He is also the author of "Taxi: Cabs and Capitalism in New York City" and active with the Campaign to Stop Funding Hate.
Biju was interviewed at length by NOII-Montreal member Jaggi. On the show, we play an excerpt from that extended interview, with Biju's reflections on day-to-day/night-to-night organizing with the Taxi Worker's Alliance, as well as the politics of race in New York City.
