[2:42-38:32] INTERVIEW WITH VIVIEN STERN
When there is a problem in our communities, we often told that the solution lies in forming new laws that will ban the unwanted behaviour. That way the people seen as creating the problem can be removed, prosecuted and punished. This criminalization approach is being used more and more in communities all over the world. This is happening at the same time as neo-liberal economic policies are expanding across the globe.

Vivien Stern has done some investigation into these connections between neo-liberalism and the creation of crime. She is the author of Creating Criminals: Prisons and People in a Market Society. http://www.fernwoodpublishing.ca. Vivien is a senior research fellow at the School of Law at Kings College London and honorary president of Penal Reform International. http://www.penalreform.org/
