Religious utopians, with the sympathy and support of tens of millions of Americans, are slowly dismantling democratic institutions to establish a religious tyranny, the springboard to an American fascism.
Chris Hedges writes about his new book: "What is happening in America is revolutionary. A group of religious utopians, with the sympathy and support of tens of millions of Americans, are slowly dismantling democratic institutions to establish a religious tyranny, the springboard to an American fascism." There are now more than 70 million evangelical Christians living in America, many of whom have established their own set of media outlets, schools, and communities.

In response to those who argue that fascism cannot possibly come to the USA Chris Hedges describes the discontent and despair that historically have driven other peoples into right wing movements. Hedges reminds us that there is fertile ground for that in the US today. The top 1 percent control more wealth than the bottom 90 percent combined. During the research for this book Hedges traveled through towns obliterated by the flight of manufacturing jobs and through soul-less suburbs. He interviewed members of mega churches who lived in despair and alienation until the church filled that void. And thats the fodder that demagogues use to amass totalitarian movements.

Chris Hedges was a foreign correspondent, for nearly two decades, for The New York Times and lost his job when he spoke out against the war. He now is a senior fellow at the Nation Institute and teaches in the Program for American Studies at Princeton University.
