In the South African city of Port Elizabeth, aluminum giant Alcan Inc. has generated contraversy once again. A proposed aluminum smelter has been the subject of local resistance due to its potential environmental and social impacts. Equally contraversial is a deal that Alcan has struck with South African public enterprise Escom to buy electricity to fuel the smelter.
