Tristen Taylor, Energy Policy Officer at Earthlife South Africa, talks about Alcan's proposed alumina smelter project in Port Elizabeth and its energy negotiations with Eskom.

CKUT Montreal - Amandla
In the South African city of Port Elizabeth, aluminum giant Alcan Inc. has generated contraversy once again. A proposed aluminum smelter has been the subject of local resistance due to its potential environmental and social
impacts. Equally contraversial is a deal that Alcan has struck with South African public
enterprise Escom to buy electricity to fuel the smelter. We spoke with Tristen Taylor, Energy Policy Officer at Earthlife Africa in Johannesberg about the project.
