Benamar Benatta entered Canada seeking political asylum on September 5, 2001. Five days later he was handcuffed, placed in the back of a car, driven to the border and handed over to United States authorities.
Benatta was placed in a U.S. detention centre where he was beaten and tortured daily. But in spite of being cleared of any involvement in terrorist activity in November 2001, he wasnt released until September 2006.
Benatta and his supporters want to know the extent of Canadas involvement in all of this and why this country handed him over to the Americans. And shes still hopeful that the government will order a public review without the need for legal proceedings.
