THE ISRAEL LOBBY AND U.S. FOREIGN POLICY
John Mearsheimer of the University of Chicago and Stephen Walt of Harvard, have written one of the most controversial articles in recent memory. The Israel Lobby,ï originally published in the London Review of Books and on the web in March 2006, examined one of the most taboo issues in America: the impact of the Israel lobby on U.S. policy.
The authors say that the response to the essay was breathtaking. Three months after the posting the (web site) recorded more than 275,000 downloads. There was also a media campaign condemning the article and the authors in the Jerusalem Post, New York Sun, Wall Street Journal, New Republic and Washington Post.
Now Mearsheimer and Walt have expanded the essay into a 500 page book entitled, The Israel Lobby and US Foreign Policy. They argue that the policies encouraged by the lobby are profoundly damaging to both America's national interest and Israel's own long-term security.
Mearsheimer and Walt spoke in Berkeley, CA, on September 19, 2007 at an event organized by Tikkun magazine and Cody's books. Introduction by Rabbi Michael Lerner in Part TWO.
