TALK:
(*scripted intro)
Through high profile stories of people like Mahar Arar and Frank Paul, the reality of racial profiling is brought into the spotlight. But for many racialized communities, racial profiling is something that is a part of daily life that not often discussed in the mainstream.

A recently published book "Conflict, Crisis and Accountability: Racial Profiling and Law Enforcement in Canada" takes a closer look at the issue. The author of the book, Charles C. Smith, was the keynote speaker at a recent forum called Confronting Racial Profiling: Racism, Policing and Community Responses. The forum was organized by the Canadian Centre For Policy Alternatives. It was held in Burnaby, BC on Feb 21st, 2008.

Charles C. Smith is a consultant to the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal, and a Lecturer at the University of Toronto. He has authored numerous papers on racial profiling, equality and diversity. He is also a published playwright, essayist and poet.

He starts his talk by playing a piece of Jazz music.
