Nov. 11, 2008, 12:22 p.m.
Dan Koeppel's book traces the history of the banana as it developed from an tropical jungle fruit to a common and cheap staple in the diet of peoples around the world. In this interview, he talks about what the banana has meant for the independence of countries unfortunate enough to be able to grow it. He also tells us about the disease that threatens to remove it from our produce shelves for ever.
