American news media demonize those who oppose various vicious state policies. At the same time, they whitewash & sanitize gruesome wars the state wages to preserve those policies. Especially wars the State of Israel wages. A photograph of a young Palestinian man inspires such reflections on the media plus reflections on Israeli rampages in Jenin (2002) and now Gaza. 3 news reports from Al-Jazeera offer a different--but still inadequate--view of our war against the people of Palestine.
Produced for WWUH-FM, "Public Alternative Radio" at the University of Hartford. Photograph of Mahmoud in Jenin is published on Flickr.com by "moomin13" (viewed 1-3-09). Many thanks to Anonymous for making available recordings of Al-Jazeera English-language news broadcasts (from January 6, 2009).
Photos, paintings, and cartoons add to the story. View them (including the photograph this program discusses) in the newsletter or on the blog: http://newworldnotes.blogspot.com/

Songs--David Rovics, "Jenin" and "Occupation"
Tom Smith, from "Waterboardin'"

The United States Government--which objected little or not at all to the events in Jenin--compels me to censor one of the words singer David Rovics uses in narrating same. Smearing excrement on walls before raping and killing the inhabitants is acceptable. Using the word "shit" in reporting such doings is offensive.

SERIES OVERVIEW -- Political and social commentary in a variety of genres. Exploring the gap between what we want ... and what they're trying to make us settle for. "Date recorded" = date of first scheduled broadcast.
