ON MARCH 15, EL SALVADOR’S 2.6 MILLION VOTERS ELECTED THE FARABUNDO MARTI LIBERATION FRONT CANDIDATE PRESIDENT OF THE COUNTRY AND THE CAPITAL OF SAN SALVADOR ERUPTED IN STREET CELEBRATION NOT UNLIKE THOSE, WHICH CONCLUDED THE ELECTION OF PRESIDENT OBAMA. THE CONTEST HAD BROUGHT HUNDREDS OF INTERNATIONAL OBSERVERS. THERE WERE WIDESPREAD REPORTS OF FRAUD ATTEMPTS BY THE RIGHT WING ARENA PARTY WHEN DOZENS OF BUSES HEADED TO THE POLLS WERE STOPPED AND FOUND TO BE CARRYING HONDURANS, GUATEMALANS AND NICARAGUANS. THE NEW PRESIDENT, MAURICIO FUENES WILL LEAD THE FIRST LEFT WING COALITION GOVERNMENT IN OVER 30 YEARS. THIS PAST THURSDAY, THE NYU DEPARTMENT OF LATINO STUDIES LOCATED ON 11TH STREET IN MANHATTAN ORGANIZED A FORUM TO REVIEW THE ELECTION AND DISCUSS THE CHALLENGES FACED BY THIS SMALL COUNTRY.
