PROPOSED LEDE: ON THE EVE OF PRESIDENT OBAMA’S HISTORIC SPEECH AT CAIRO UNIVERSITY IN EGYPT THIS WEEK, WHICH WAS WIDELY PUBLICIZED AS AN ATTEMPT TO MEND U.S. RELATIONS WITH THE MUSLIM WORLD, A 31 YEAR OLD YEMENI PRISONER MOHAMMED SALIH, HELD AT THE GUANTANAMO BAY DETENTION CAMP SINCE 2002, WAS FOUND DEAD IN HIS CELL OF APPARENT SUICIDE. MR. SALIH’S DEATH WAS THE FIFTH SUICIDE AMONG THOSE ONCE CALLED “ENEMY COMBATTANTS” AT THE FACILITY, WHICH HAS TARNISHED THE HUMAN RIGHTS IMAGE OF THE UNITED STATES AROUND THE WORLD.

THE CLOSING OF GUANTANAMO BAY PRISON CAME TO A SUDDEN STOP, 2 WEEKS AGO, WHEN THE U.S. SENATE OVERWHELMINGLY REFUSED TO FUND THE TRANSFER OF THE REMAINING 240, NOW 239, DETAINEES TO U.S. PRISONS.
