This is the full 11-23-09 episode of the Labor Express Radio program.

On today’s program we take a deeper look at the struggle of the workers at the Bissell products warehouse in Chicago’s Southwest suburbs to get their jobs back. On last week’s program we heard from Carl Rosen, Western Region President of UE (The United Electrical Workers Union) about how when the Bissell workers presented their employer with a petition to form a union, they were fired en masse. The workers and the union have already won pay for the workers through the end of their temp agencies contract in January but they are still hoping to force the company to rehire the workforce directly. They took their campaign to consumers of Bissell products at the Macy’s Department store in Downtown Chicago on Saturday and I spoke with a number of the workers and UE International Rep. Mark Meinster.

Will also here about a successful strike of graduate employees at the University of Illinois in Champaign/Urbana who won a new and improved contract from the university late last week.

From Labor Express intern Tessa Campagna will hear about efforts by the Arise Chicago workers center to win a group of Polish construction workers unpaid wages due them and from Labor Beat’s Dave Vance will hear about a protest at the Thorp Elementary public school on Chicago’s Southside last week where teachers, parents and community members once again united to oppose further public school privatizations in Chicago.
