Speaking before the Operations Committee of the St. Lawrence County Legislature, Don Hassig, Director of Cancer Action NY describes the need for widespread public education on the subject of pollutant carcinogen exposure reduction based upon exposure avoidance. Director Hassig requested that the County Legislature write to the offices of Senators Schumer and Gillibrand seeking the services of these two New York State elected representatives in the creation of a Pollutant Carcinogen Exposure Reduction Act, which would mobilize the public health agencies of federal, state and county governments for the purpose of informing Americans concerning changes in diet and behavior that can reduce exposure to pollutant carcinogens thereby reducing cancer risk. Priority pollutants for such an educational outreach include: dioxins, dioxin-like compounds, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), bisphenol-A, polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), benzene, and carcinogenic metals.
