The interim Pacifica National Board held its first meeting by telephone today (Dec.
29) and elected three representatives of the former minority and the Local Advisory Boards as its chief
officers. Minority nominee Leslie Cagan of New York was elected chairman, Carol Spooner of the
Berkeley LAB was named the secretary and Jabari Zakiya of the WPFW LAB treasurer. The board then
voted to hold a face-to-face meeting in New York city Jan 11-13.
The board also agreed to return Democracy Now! to the Pacifica airwaves "as soon as possible,"
appointed a committee to find a new executive director, and passed a resolution requiring station
managers to attend the New York meeting and present financial data on their stations.
But it divided on partisan lines on three issues that will now require decisions by Alameda Superior Court
Judge Ronald A. Sabraw. The board voted 9-6 in favor of naming a committee to investigate issues at
WBAI and make recommendations to the iPNB; and 9-5 to suspend the gag rule and require local
stations to broadcast programs discussing the conflict over Pacifica; and to fire Pacifica
