Our rights to abortion and to use (or even convey information about) contraception owe much to crusader Bill Baird. Seeing a woman die from a coat-hanger abortion changed his life. He survived assassination attempts, 8 criminal convictions, the firebombing of his abortion clinic (the nation's first), the breakup of his family, and the absence of any help from NOW, ACLU, & other potential allies. 3 Supreme Court cases include his name. Quite a story!, well-told by Baird himself.
Excerpted from a panel discussion at the University of Hartford, February 16, 2010.

New World Notes is produced under the auspices (Latin for "imprimatur") of WWUH-FM, a community service of that beacon of light in darkest Connecticut, the University of Hartford. Feedback to kdowst at hotmail period com.
