This is the full 4-12-10 episode of the Labor Express Radio program.
On this weekâs episode of Labor Express we take a look at number of labor actions held around the city last week.
First weâll hear from Gina Gemmel of GEO â the Graduate Employees Organization at UIC. The graduate employees had been threatening to strike last week after a year of fruitless negotiations over their contract with the university. Fortunately, the university finally saw the light in the 13th hour and agreed to a fair contract with GEO.
Will hear from CTA workers and CTA riders who held a rally at the State of Illinois building last Wednesday. They are angry about the recent CTA job and service cuts and want the state and federal government to provide the funds needed to get public transit in Chicago back on track
Will also hear about UPS workers who held a 48 hour fast outside the UPS facility near downtown Chicago last week. They are angry at UPS for the companies participation in the e-verify system. UPSâs use of e-verify has already lead to the unjustified dismissal of a number of employees.
And in the second half of tonightâs program I will air an interview with Jeff Biggers author of Reckoning at Eagle Creek. Biggers has written extensively about the coal industry and coal miners. We discussed the tragedy at the Upper Big Branch mine in West Virginia last week where 29 miners lost their lives.
