This is the full 4-19-10 episode of the Labor Express Radio program.
On last weekâs episode of Labor Express we talked with author Jeff Biggers about the death of 29 miners at the Upper Big Branch Mine in Montcoal, West Virginia. Will hear more from Biggers today including a reading from his newly released book Reckoning at Eagle Creek: The Secret Legacy of Coal in the Heartland. Will also here Biggers discuss how coal mining is not only dangerous to miners but dangerous to our environment.
In a related story will hear about a newly proposed ordinance in Chicagoâs city council which will force the Fisk and Crawford coal fired power plants to dramatically reduce the pollution they produce.
A film that will be showing at this yearâs Chicago Latino Film Festival is a documentary about the emergence of the contemporary immigrant rights movement in 2006 and 2007. The film is the work of local activist Esau Melendez with contributions by Labor Beat TV producer Andrew Friend. And will close out todayâs program with some commentary on the announcement this week that Andy Stern, president of SEIU will be retiring.
