This is the full 6-14-10 episode of the Labor Express Radio program.
On todayâs program weâll hear about a tremendous victory for the forces of reform in the Chicago Teachers Union. CORE, the Caucus of Rank and File Educators, a reform caucus within the teachers union that emerged less than two years ago has won the election for union leadership over the incumbent United Progressive Caucus receiving nearly 60% of the vote. This is a startling victory for a group that started with just a handful of angry teachers back in 2008, but which built itself into a formidable force with zero money but a lot hard grassroots organizing. Will hear from CORE member and new elected Teachers Union President Karen Lewis.
Will also bring you more audio from this yearâs Labor Notes conference. Will hear from a couple of the international guests at the conference. First will hear from Jose Humberto Montes de Oca who is a leader in the Mexican Electrical Workers union SME and after that will hear from George Walter, a German autoworker and a member of Germanâs largest union I.G. Metall.
