This is the full 6-21-10 episode of the Labor Express Radio program.
On todayâs program weâll hear from three members of the Chicago Teachers Union new leadership team. CORE, the Caucus of Rank and File Educators, a reform caucus within the teachers union, won the election for union leadership over the incumbent United Progressive Caucus receiving nearly 60% of the vote. This is a historic victory for a leading group progressives and reformers in the union who have promised to engage the union membership in a much more militant and serious opposition to the school privatization agenda supported by the Mayor and the school board. President-elect Karen Lewis, the unionâs new Financial Secretary Kristine Mayle and the new Recording Secretary Michael Brunson appeared on a special Labor Beat T.V. program broadcast live over the internet last Friday. Weâll air excerpts from that program on todayâs episode of Labor Express.
Weâll also bring you audio from the rally outside the Congress Hotel last Monday, marking the 7th Anniversary of a strike by workers at the Congress and an update on the UNITE-HERE Local 1âs contract campaign with over 30 hotels in Chicago. That contract fight will reach the one year mark this coming August.
