BARELY A WEEK AFTER CATHIE BLACK WAS SACKED AFTER SERVING ONLY THREE MONTHS AS NEW YORK CITY SCHOOLS CHANCELLOR, ANOTHER STORM IS BREWING IN NEWARK, THE LARGEST SCHOOL DISTRICT IN NEW JERSEY, THAT HAS BEEN UNDER STATE CONTROL SINCE 1995. SINCE THE ANNOUNCEMENT BY FACEBOOK FOUNDER MARK ZUCKERBERG, LAST SEPTEMBER ON THE TV SHOW "OPRAH", THAT HE WOULD PLEDGE $100 MILLION TO THE NEWARK SCHOOLS, CRITICISM HAS STARTED TO MOUNT. RUMORS OF MASSIVE LAY OFFS AND CLOSING OF SCHOOLS HAVE BROUGHT THE TEACHERS AND THE COMMUNITY UP IN ARMS. THEY ARE ACCUSING GOVERNOR CHRISTIE AND MAYOR BOOKER OF SECRET DEALINGS AND CHALLENGING THEIR AUTHORITY IN FACILITATING THE PRIVATIZATION OF THE SCHOOL SYSTEM.
LAST WEDNESDAY, A HEARING OF THE NEWARK CITY COUNCIL EDUCATION COMMITTEE GATHERED SEVERAL PANELS OF EXPERTS TO SPEAK ON EDUCATION REFORM. WBAI FRED NGUYEN WAS THERE AND HE FILES THIS REPORT:
