ON JULY 1ST, PRISONERS AT THE SUPERMAX PELICAN BAY STATE PRISON IN CALIFORNIA WENT ON A HUNGER STRIKE PROTESTING BAD TREATMENT AND POLICIES, WHICH SUPPORTERS SAY, AMOUNT TO ABUSE AND EVEN TORTURE. THIS DEVELOPMENT COMES ON THE TAIL OF A U.S. SUPREME COURT DECISION IN LATE MAY DECLARING THE STATES PRISON OVERCROWDING UNCONSTITUTIONAL. ON WEDNESDAY JULY 6, THE L.A. TIMES REPORTED THAT THE HUNGER STRIKE HAD SPREAD TO 11 OF THE 33 FACILITIES IN THE CALIFORNIA PRISON SYSTEM.

ON THE SAME DAY, WBAI FRED NGUYEN, WAS IN SAN FRANCISCO AND MET MANUEL LAFONTAINE, A FORMER PRISONER AND NOW ORGANIZER WITH “ALL OF US OR NONE”, A SUPPORT GROUP FOR PRISONERS AND FAMILIES.

MR. LAFONTAINE, WHO WAS PARTICIPATING IN THE HUNGER STRIKE IN SOLIDARITY, GAVE SOME DETAILS ON THE SITUATION….
