Daley makes the case that of the two major threats that humanity currently faces only nuclear war, accidental or intentional is likely to wipe out the human species. He recounts an incident in which only the presence of a British spy at the highest levels of Soviet government, alerted NATO planers to the fact that their "war games" had been misread as an impending attack. The Russian leadership was within minutes of launching their own missiles when they were alerted by a "stand down" of NATO activity that they had misread NATO's intent. The "stand down" came because the British agent was able to reach his handlers and alert them to what was taking place.
