Earlier today [24 Jan 2012], the U.S. Congress debated the future of the "Occupy DC" encampment in Washington, under the rubric of "McPherson Square: Who Made the Decision to Allow Indefinite Camping in the Park?"
At issue is a conservative effort to evict the occupation through new anti-camping legislation -- versus the National Park Service's more liberal and flexible enforcement policy aimed at defending First Amendment rights of assembly and expression.
Today's hearing on a legal decision regarding a permit for the DC Occupation was convened by the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, with testimony from Columbia District officials, a legal scholar, and the head of the Park Service. Participants of the Occupy DC movement were not allowed to testify.
