THE OCCUPY YOUTH MOVEMENT, WHICH STARTED IN NEW YORK CITY IN SEPTEMBER LAST YEAR, IS SHOWING SIGNS OF RESILIENCE IN THE FORM OF CONTINUED SOCIAL AND POLITICAL PROTESTS AT HOME AND ABROAD.

THE DIVERSITY OF THE ACTIONS, HOWEVER, HAS CAUSED SOME SUPPORTERS TO QUESTION ITS LACK OF A COHERENT MESSAGE OR STRATEGY. THREE WEEKS AGO, FORMER JOURNALIST AND AUTHOR, CHRIS HEDGES PUBLISHED AN ATTACK ON THE “BLACK BLOC”, WHICH HE SAID PROMOTED CONFRONTATION WITH THE POLICE AND DESTRUCTION OF PROPERTY.

OTHERS RETORT THAT ANARCHISTS HAVE HISTORICALLY BEEN PART OF MANY POPULAR REVOLUTIONS.

THIS PAST FRIDAY, MAIA RAMNATH CAME TO SPEAK AT BLUESTOCKINGS, IN MANHATTAN’S LOWER EAST SIDE, ABOUT HER NEW BOOK, DECOLONIZING ANARCHISM: AN ANTI-AUTHORITARIAN HISTORY OF INDIA’S LIBERATION STRUGGLE. WBAI FRED NGUYEN WAS THERE AND FILES THIS REPORT.
