Smith on his new work inspired by the late Rodney King. The vicious beating of King by four LAPD cops was seen around the world. When the cops were acquitted in April, 1992, LA erupted in the largest urban rebellion in US history. Smith tells King's story from the beating to his death in 2012. “Getting Down to BAsics with the People” continues with an in-depth conversation with Nicky, a woman who suffered abuse and brutality her entire life and then discovered the movement for revolution.
