There is rarely much relation between the real factors motivating political power players to action, and the rhetoric they share during press conferences.

One case in point would be the energy the Harper government in Canada is exerting trying to sell the tar sands in Alberta as a cornerstone of Canada's economic recovery and energy strategy. More oil goes to the United States of America from Canada than from any other country. Is this an advantage for Canada?

In this interview for the Global Research News Hour, journalist and author Andrew Nikiforuk makes the distinction between Canada as an 'Energy Superpower' and Canada as a 'Petro State' and what that means for the health of Canadian society generally.

Then there is the question of the resignation of David Petraeus from the CIA. In a lengthy conversation with the Global Research News Hour, writer and broadcaster Stephen Lendman shares his views that the Petraeus resignation was not likely related to an extra marital affair. He further reflects on US foreign policy in the wake of President Obama's re-election and Israeli violence in Gaza.
