The Idle No More movement began as a string of emails as four women from Saskatchewan- Jessica Gorden, Sylvia Mc Adam, Nina Wilson and Sheelah McLean got together and decided to make a âsincere effort to make some change.â The context for their resolution was the Canadian Bill C-45; the governmentâs omnibus budget implementation bill that includes changes to land management on the reservations. It attacks the land base reserved for Indigenous people and removes protection for hundreds of waterways and weakens Canadaâs environmental laws all in one volley.
In this segment of Latin Waves, Sylvia Richardson interviews Nina Wilson on the Idle No More Movement, Nina speaks of the long term struggle for autonomy that Aboriginal Peoples have sustained, and asserts the core values of Idle No More "We are here to ensure the land, the waters, the air, and the creatures and indeed each of us, return to balance and discontinue harming each other and the earth."
We also interview Raul Burbano who is an activist with Common Frontiers
