In the last election, the far right party Golden Dawn in Greece won 18 seats in the national government, putting it in third place in terms of popular support. This is one example of the potential for a surge of the radical right in countries that are hard hit by the economic slump. Dr. Oliver Schmidtke is director at the Centre for Global Studies at the University of Victoria.
