Jan. 31, 2013, 11:51 a.m.
In this interesting speech, Richard Heinberg discusses three global crises--the end of cheap energy, runaway debt, and climate change (plus overpopulation). This week he focuses a common cause of all these crises--an economic system that depends on constant, compounding GROWTH.

But such growth cannot continue forever on a finite planet. Heinberg helps us imagine--and make some plans for--a low-growth or no-growth future. It might not be so bad, after all.

Plus a short video by Heinberg.
Heinbergs talk is titled "Life After Growth: Why the Economy is Shrinking and What to Do About It." He gave it in Chicago on November 2, 2012. It was recorded by Kelly Pierce, of the Chicago Independent Media Center, and previously broadcast on Alex Smiths Radio Ecoshock Show (dated January 16, 2013. www.ecoshock.org). Thanks to all concerned.

"New World Notes" is produced under the auspices (Latin for "resigned sighs") of WWUH-FM, a community service of that beacon of light in darkest Connecticut, the University of Hartford.
Richard Heinberg is Senior Fellow at the Post Carbon Institute.

This installment includes also a short video ("Who Killed Economic Growth") produced by Heinberg's outfit and a bit of relevant music (Janis Joplin's "Mercedes-Benz").
