The majority of new housing built today in this country is of the controlled variety. Glossy ads romance housing consumers with luxurious interior features, dazzling amenities and promises of such impossible things as "carefree" living. It all sounds so perfect, evoking a sense of community, a feeling of belonging, a dream of life happily ever after. Why then do homeowners, after joining this fabulous family, feel like they have a starring role in the latest Stephen King horror movie? And when things do go horribly wrong, what should be done about them?
On The Commons with me this week is Senator Mike Schneider. Senator Mike, as he is affectionately known, has been sensitive to the plight of his Nevada constituents and has introduced legislation designed to curb some of the abuses by those in power in homeowner associations. We'll talk about the problems in associations, we'll talk about pending legislation and we'll talk about much needed adult supervision in controlled developments.
