US forces suffered about 350 casualties during the 1991 Gulf War, while tens of thousands of Gulf War personnel have come down with any one of a number of disabling and life-threatening medical conditions, such as, cancer, respiritory problems, neurological disorders and the like. Thousands have died. Casual observers say exposure to depleted uranium particles left over from spent munitions as a possible cause. The depleted-uranium bullets are made of low-level radioactive nuclear-waste material, left over from the making of uranium fuel rods and weapons. It is 1.7 times as dense as lead, and easily burns its way through armor. But it is controversial because it leaves a trail of contamination that has half-life of 4.5 billion years - the age of our solar system. In the 1991Gulf War, US forces used about 320 tons of DU, much of it fired by A-10 aircraft. Some estimates suggest 1,000 tons or more of DU was used in the current war.
