Hey Listeners,
I've long been a fan of the Grateful Dead. And while I love their own material and their long jammy interpretations of other artists' work, what I think draws me to their body of work more than anything is the music they turned to for inspiration. Whether it is folk, bluegrass, old-timey, soul, blues, Motown, Dylan, country, or even the Beatles the music the Dead covered - IMHO - makes them America's greatest band. Their ability to play all types of American music (and beyond) makes them more important than a jam band.
Tonight I've got 41 incredible tracks lined up. All of these are the original (or most important) versions of the songs that the Dead covered. Many became staples of live Dead shows - others were rarities not played often at all. However all of them are great and they're from all the genres already mentioned. It's a diverse set. Whether you like the Dead or can't stand them - tonight's show will still sound great.
In '95 Henry Kaiser and David Gans put out a collection on Shanachi Records called the Music Never Stopped: Roots of The Grateful Dead. Tonight's show expands on that and adds to the collection.
