In April 2011, Manitoba experienced a 1-in-350-year flood - unprecedented water levels were intentionally diverted through the Fairford Dam to Lake St. Martin. As a result, First Nation communities in the area were swamped and 2100 people were forced from their homes into hotels and temporary housing units, which is still largely the case today.
‘Treading Water: Plight of the Manitoba First Nation Flood Evacuees’ looks at the issue and airs on CBC this Saturday, August 23 at 7 pm CST. The documentary is produced by Wookey Productions and Nüman Films. Victoria King talked with one of the films’ producer, writer and director, Janelle Wookey.
