Peyote buttons? The sessions for Between the Buttons took place between August and December in the magic year of 1966 in Hollywood and in London. They were the last sessions with Andrew Loog Oldham as producer. The album contains the most purely British of the Stones' songs, playing out like a psychedelic English summer bristling with class conflict. It was Frank Zappa's favorite Stones album. He thought the social comment was relevant and he thought it was better than Sgt Pepper. (Brian belched in reply when Frank told him that.) It is now mostly forgotten -- Mick and Keith both claim to not care for it at all. Yet this wry oft-acoustic music (though dig the powerful guitar riff on Amanda Jones!) set off sparks for so many of us it deserves a deep listen on the Chill Room.

Special thanks to my live listeners and to all who give me feedback, because it's always needed. Thanks of course to killradio,, and podomatic. Presented for education and for fun and because I love this album. Comments requested.

Between the Buttons produced by Andrew Loog Oldham. UK release 20 January 1967, US release 11 February 1967. This program uses both the stereo and original mono (m) mixes of the British Between the Buttons lp. The American release added the Ruby Tuesday/Spend the Night Together single but dropped Backstreet Girl and Please Go Home. Oldham took all four of those tracks and added others dropped from the American release of Aftermath (Take It or Leave It) and a few scattered 1965-66 recordings (My Girl, Sitting on a Fence, etc.) to make the American Flowers compilation, summer 1967.

The Rolling Stones: Mick Jagger, vocals, percussion; Keith Richards, guitar, keys, vocals; Bill Wyman, bass, keys, vocals; Charlie Watts, drums; Brian Jones, guitar, keys, vibes, recorder, sax, dulcimer, oscillator, harmonica; Ian Stewart, piano; Jack Nitzsche, piano; Nicky Hopkins, piano.

She's sophisticated. My head's fit to bust.
