Welcome to another edition of This Week In Palestine, a weekly show hosted for many years by our beloved Sherif Fam, and continued in his loving memory by a committed group of his friends. Every week This Week In Palestine, brings you news and views from a decidedly Palestinian perspective, a perspective seldom heard in the United States.

On today’s show we share with you a condensed version of a colorful, informative talk given by esteemed Palestinian scholar and historian Walid Khalidi, co-founder of the Institute of Palestine Studies. He gave this talk in 2009 as keynote on the 60th anniversary of the Nakba, or Palestinian Catastrophe of 1948. As Dr Khalidi explains, in biological terms: it's a mistake to regard the Nakba as a discrete event; 1947-1948 was merely when it was born alive; it was conceived in 1897, and it has lived its monstrous life in full force ever since it was born.

Recently, our host has been reading on her commute to and from work about a “nakba” in our own backyard, the effort to destroy and disempower our Native Americans, and she can’t help noticing the similarities between the Native American narrative, and the Palestinian narrative. Many of the same key elements are there: the land theft, the violent removal of people from their ancestral lands, the attempts at cultural genocide, and the daily violation of human rights. And just as we cannot move forward in the United States if we do not acknowledge the brutality and injustice of our own past, Israel and Palestine cannot find peace and justice, if the state of Israel does not acknowledge its brutal and violent role in the Nakba.

Stay tuned for another thought provoking segment of This Week In Palestine. Now let’s lend our ears to Dr. Walid Khalidi.
This Week In Palestine (a weekly part of Truth and Justice Radio) is an award-winning three-quarter-hour segment of news from Palestine and discussion of issues relevant to the Palestinians' struggle for freedom from Israel's brutal military occupation and colonization of their homeland. It speaks from the point of view of Palestinians and those who care about them.

It's a regular part of Truth and Justice Radio, aired Sundays 6-10am ET on WZBC 90.3FM, Newton, MA, streaming and archived for two weeks at wzbc.org; TJR's website, truthandjusticeradio.org, has a link to This Week In Palestine archives back thru 1-6-2008; earlier editions are obtainable from radio4all.net or by navigating through our playlists. (At this important time, TJR has been airing a lot of Palestine coverage IN ADDITION to that provided by This Week In Palestine.) We hope you'll write to us at tjr@bluebottle.com if you rebroadcast our work, or have questions or comments.
