In this edition we feature a presentation by Serene Murad, born in the United States and raised in Palestine. Her mother is American and her father is Palestinian. She recently completed her Freshman year at Wesleyan University in Connecticut. Her story is interesting and through it we get a realistic view of life in both Jerusalem and in the West Bank. Serene spoke to a peace action group in Natick and it was recorded by our colleague, Stan Robinson, for This Week In Palestine. The presentation is informal, with spontaneous Q&A dispersed throughout. Listen carefully and you'll hear it all.
By being born in the US, Serene was privileged with Israeli citizenship in spite of her Palestinian blood. Even though Israel's ubiquitous and always-increasing checkpoints were easier to navigate because of her papers, she and her family suffered harsh discrimination for their skin color.
Before that, we begin the show by rememberingâ¦remembering that a year ago Israeli bombs were falling on Gaza. To mark this one year anniversary of that tragi assault on Israel, Refaat Alareer and Laila El Haddad have co-edited an anthology called "Gaza Unsilenced" (published by Just World Books ). We present some excerpts from the editors' introductory essay that encapsulate the horror of Operation Protective Edge.
This Week In Palestine (a weekly part of Truth and Justice Radio) is an award-winning three-quarter-hour segment of news from Palestine and discussion of issues relevant to the Palestinians' struggle for freedom from Israel's brutal military occupation and colonization of their homeland. It speaks from the point of view of Palestinians and those who care about them. It's a regular part of Truth and Justice Radio, aired Sundays 6-10am ET on WZBC 90.3FM, Newton, MA, streaming and archived for two weeks at wzbc.org; TJR's website, truthandjusticeradio.org, has a link to This Week In Palestine archives back thru 1-6-2008; earlier editions are obtainable from radio4all.net or by navigating through our playlists. (At this important time, TJR has been airing a lot of Palestine coverage IN ADDITION to that provided by This Week In Palestine.) We hope you'll write to us at tjr@bluebottle.com if you rebroadcast our work, or have questions or comments.
