How General Motors destroyed America's light-rail transit systems and created the Highway Lobby. That forced Americans to buy cars, build millions of miles of new road, and suffer the bad results.

This week: How the Highway Lobby was formed by GM, Standard Oil, DuPont, and the tire companies. How the U.S. then had an orgy of highway-building. The damage to city life. Plus the growing public opposition and the fight for good public transportation. (Continued under "Credits"...)
Alas, the Lobby--in cahoots with Silicon Valley--has a vision of the future: automated cars, and three times as many of them.

Jim Klein directed this 1996 documentary film, which I have adapted to radio.

"New World Notes" is produced under the auspices (Latin for "spreading chestnut tree") of WWUH-FM, a community service of that beacon of light in darkest Connecticut, the University of Hartford.
